Extremes

I am enjoying a rare moment of quiet in my house. As you can see the three children home are eating lunch, reading books at the same time. And it is lovely.

This morning was a series of door slamming, baby crying (not mine, a friend's), feet running, children crying (mine and my friend's), boom box playing loudly noises.

Every time I get irritated by the noise, I remind myself that soon - sooner than I can imagine - my house will be quiet. Very quiet. My children will be grown, and it will be just my husband and I.

I can hardly imagine it.

In the meantime, I live in a world of extremes.

EXTREMES
James Whitcomb Riley

A little boy once played so loud
That the thunder, up in a thundercloud,
Said, "Since I can't be heard, why, then
I'll never, never thunder again!"

And a little girl once kept so still
That she heard a fly on the window sill
Whisper and say to a ladybird, -
"She's the stillest child I ever heard!"

(As an aside, both my boys are loud, but only one of my girls is quiet. However, that doesn't keep me from enjoying this poem!)

I constantly have to remind myself that I must let go of the little and big annoyances (like poop smeared on the floor and ink scribbled on the night stand) that this time is so fleeting and am ever so grateful of the moments when things are relaxed and happy like our time at the park this afternoon. Love to you.

Ohhhhh, the noise.

I am always trying to work through my frustration at the sheer volume of a house full of kids. It makes me appreciate those rare moments of quiet all the more! That's a sweet and whimsical poem. It would be cute, I think, to hang it in a child's bedroom!

Our rule is no library books at the table. We pay enough fines without ruining them with food. All other books are free range.

And I echo the other ladies with the noise. There is so much of it! We don't have an elder right now, so we have been taking full advantage of the relaxed noise rules, and it's making me a little crazy!

My girls will love this one; I have a feeling it will inspire a few moments of quiet--you know, just to see if they can really CAN hear a fly whispering. ;-D
